LEARNING TO WALK ON WATER!

Matthew 14: 22-33

Just a few extra thoughts on my sermon from Sunday while sitting at the table communing with the Lord and a cup of coffee on Tuesday morning.

  1. A Great Storm

“and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.” Vs. 24 “and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.” Vs. 24

A great storm had been brewing in the lives of our Lord Jesus Christ andHis disciples all day. According to Matthew 14 the day began with John the Baptist, the Preparer, Forerunner of Christ being beheaded.

Even in the midst of grief our Lord continued to minister to the multitudes teaching and preaching all day and later in the evening by feeding the thousands. Exhausted from loss and ministry Jesus retreats a mountain side and sends his twelve disciples in a boat out on the sea so he could be alone.

Everywhere in our world we are surrounded by great storms: Japan, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti, and also in our friends, family, personal lives. Why are there storms in our lives and in our world?

  1. The Invitation

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Vs. 27

The professional fishermen had seen many storms before and were able to row to shore and withstand the storm. However this storm was the perfect storm, they were unable to control the boat for the wind was contrary to them.

Even nature seems to have taken a negative vent toward them and their entire lives were threatened.

How many people there are today who have lost jobs, homes, family, and marriages feel their lives are under the attack of a great storm?

Just like the boats on the day of tusmai they were going to sink. But miracously Jesus comes walking on the water to where they are. In the midst of raging waves, the winds, fatigue, they do not see, or understand.

Their hearts sank and thought he was a ghost. But when the Lord speaks they recognize his voice saying: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid? Where can we go to escape the presence of God?

Is there any storm that is so big that he will never be present, loving, caring, and working for good in our lives?

  1. Peter Begins to Sink

“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink,” vs. 30

Only two people have walked on water: Jesus and Peter. The other disciples has the same opportunity but for whatever reason they remained in the boat. Here was something they had never seen or experienced before and they weren’t about to think outside the box. Not only did Peter think outside the box, but in the midst of the storm he stepped outside the boat.

What is Christ calling you to do to that would require you to think outside the box, or step outside the boat? What would you have to leave behind: friends, money, jobs, security, purpose, possessions? What is the fear that is in your heart that keeps you from doing what Jesus wants you to do, and the fear that makes you sink?

  1. Peter Prayed

“Cried out, “Lord, save me!” vs. 30 Three simple words but all that was adequate for the Master of the Sea respond. As a disciples Peter had witnessed the Divine Power of Christ as he feed the 5000, healed the sick, raised the dead, gave sight to the blind, but these miracles all involved someone else. Could Christ really help Peter, himself? Could Peter who is a part of the inner circle of disciples, some say was the leader of the pack, could he let go of his own pride, wisdom, strength, position, admit his own inadequacy in the situation and desperately call out: “Lord, save me?”

What is it that keeps us from calling on the name of the Lord?

Is it our own pride, independence, our ability to get by, resources, other friends, other loves such as possessions, persons, or purpose? Just like Jonah, Dying Thief on the Cross, or Saul on the Damascus Road, a storm can come our way like we’ve never seen before to get our attention and help us to understand how inadequate we are and of the necessity for survival and for LIFE we must call on the name of the Lord! As one country preacher asked his congregation: “What is it going to take of God to get your attention.?”

The storms of life will come our way. Just remember Jesus comes to us in the midst of the storm and invites us to “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” We must keep our eyes on Jesus and not allow the distractions or negativity make us loose our focus. Remember, we can never be true disciples unless we love him more than any other person, possession, or person. He requires that we place Him first. The greatest prayer we can ever pray is three simple words: “Lord, save me!” Those words enables him to heal the broken heart, give hope to the hopeless, love the unlovely, to forgive the greatest sinner, and give unto us eternal life. He can set our feet on dry ground, give us a new day of beginning with hope, joy, love, and life. Do you need to pray those three words today?

Empty Barrel Religion I Kings 17: 8-16

Empty Barrel Religion is about a Phoenicia woman who God knew had a great faith. During a time of three years of famine God sent the great prophet Elijah to her home to provide for his needs. God is always working for good in his people’s lives and by faith Elijah obeyed the Lord. The relationship between the Prophet Elijah and the Widow of Zarepahth would be reciprocal in nature as they were people of faith and were obedient unto the Lord.

Upon arriving at the widows household Elijah asked for bread and water. However the widow told Elijah she had only a handful of meal and a little oil. She had determined to cook her last meal and then she and her son would die. But Elijah had a better idea. Put God First! He instructed her to bring him the first bread, as well as prepare some for her and her son.

God would then make the difference. Elijah promised her that during the time of famine her barrel of meal and olive oil would be replenished by God. By faith she responded to the instruction of the prophet and God did provide for her, son, and Elijah’s needs.

God has always desired that we put Him first. The question is: do we put God first in our lives are or we giving Him the leftovers?

Here are some Bible verses to consider. We know that the first man and woman sinned and brought the consequences into the world which we still reap. However, the first brothers, Cain and Able raised the bar of sin to another level when Cain killed his brother Abel. Every day we read in the newspaper of murder or we hear of it on Live Action News. But here in the first pages of Genesis we find sin taking a deadly toil as Cain slew his own brother. Why?

Hebrews 11: 4 “By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did, by faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well offerings.”

Abel gave God First Place in his life as well as worship, where Cain gave God the leftovers. In other words, Cain failed to put God first, then he murdered his brother! In our society I see so many who give nothing to the Lord in return for all of His many blessings, or just giving God what is left over. God demands the Best of our Lives!

We find a progressive revelation in the Bible and in the Ten Commandments the first commandment “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me.” Before stealing, killing, adultery,

HERE IT IS…thou shalt have no other gods before me.

If we truly love the Lord Jesus with all our hearts there cannot be another person, place, possession that we love more. He demands to be first.

In the last book of the O.T. the prophet Malachi demands, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse.” This is not any tithe but God demands the first tithe.

There is no way that our lives are pleasing unto God unless we make his FIRST.

Jesus said in Matthew 6: 13 : “Seek the first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and al these things be added unto you.”

HOW DO WE RESPOND TO GOD? We must first

1) BELIEVE IN GOD.

I believe that God’s greatest revelation of Himself is found in Jesus Christ, His precious son, and our savior whose very purpose was to the put God the Father first in everything. Apart from faith in God it is impossible for us to please God. However, our faith must give us direction, courage, purpose, power to overcome the obstacles that we face in life.

Jesus said, “If you keep my commandments you shall abide in my love even as I kept my Father’s Commandments and abide in His love.” “Let your lights so shine before men they may see your Good Works and give glory to the Father which is in heaven.” Just as the widow, Elijah, and Jesus were faithful to the God the Father’s will, so must we be doers of the word and not hearers only.

2) FAITH IN OURSELVES

Not only should we walk by faith demonstrating our trust and dependence upon the Lord, but we must have faith to believe that God can use each of us in His kingdoms work. Like servants of old like Jonah, Moses, etc. we tend to find excuses why we don’t serve the Lord. As Grady, former member said, “preacher most folks have a poke full of excuses why they don’t serve the Lord.” One of the main reasons people don’t serve is their own feeling of inadequacy.

However, our Lord taught us in Luke 9:23 “If any man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
