“If you are planting for a year, you plant grains. If you are planting for a decade, you plant trees. If you are planting for a generation, you plant people.”-Haitian Proverb
A Dream, a Desire, a Destiny
A dream, a desire, a destiny In 1993, five young Haitian men pursued an audacious dream to start a school in the remote and impoverished region of Bayonnais in northern Haiti. OFCB Ministries was born out of this dream.
What began as a handful of students meeting underneath mango trees eventually grew into a fully functioning elementary and high school serving over 2,000 students.
Over time OFCB Ministries expanded to include a church, granary, and scholarship program for graduates to attend college.
Through partnerships with congregations in the United States and two chapters of Engineers Without Borders, OFCB Ministries embarked on their goal to see their region become a thriving place to live and raise a family.
Friends of OFCB
In 2010, the congregations in the United States supporting OFCB Ministries saw the need for greater coordination in supporting their Haitian friends and formed a 501(c)(3) organization called “Friends of OFCB.”
Friends of OFCB is the primary vehicle for coordinating efforts to empower OFCB Ministries through financial blessing as well as technical expertise.
Friends of OFCB seeks to walk alongside their Haitian brothers and sisters as they pursue a common dream of helping the children of Bayonnais develop their proud past into a promising future.
Will you join us on this journey of hope?
Why Bayonnais?
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with most of its inhabitants living on less than a dollar per day. 80% of the country’s 9 million inhabitants are illiterate and the average Haitian’s life expectancy is only 60 years old.
The vast majority of the country does not have access to electricity or clean water, and hunger and starvation are often a way of life.
Bayonnais is located about 1 hour east of Gonaieves and is home to 80,000 of the country’s most impoverished inhabitants.
With no access to healthcare, government services, or stable food supply, the people of the Bayonnais struggle through life hoping for a better tomorrow.
What does OFCB Ministries do?
Operates an elementary and high school with a combined enrollment of over 2,000 students. OFCB’s school also provides each student with a nutritious meal each day.
Manages a granary that distributes food to individuals who paticipate in community wide public works projects such as road and canal construction.
Provides health services for the Bayonnais community aimed at educating people about disease prevention and assisting in the treatment of the ill.
Leads the Community in projects to build bridges, construct a solar power grid, offer health services and respond to natural disasters.
Worships and fellowships together as a church dedicated to serving the needs of their fellow neighbors and proclaiming the gospel in an area steeped in voo doo.
